A good day for buying movies...at last!
Ladies and gents, today is that most glorious of days...New Release Tuesday, and for the first time in a long time, there are several titles that may be worth adding to that growing collection on your shelves!
This week there are some great titles releasing on DVD and Bluray, so how about we dive right on in, starting with Tom Cruise's latest release Oblivion.
Oblivion brings together an all-star cast including Morgan Freeman (Now You See Me, Unforgiven), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Mama, Game of Thrones) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace). It tells the story of Jack Harper (Cruise), a drone repairman stationed on Earth. The plot is your classic, man serves government/nation/ideological belief, man rescues girl, girl makes waves in all man believes, man questions his purpose, man fights for what he now believes is true.
However, don't let this deter you, just because it's built on an unoriginal foundation doesn't mean the house is not worth living in. With a great melding of story, action and cast, this one is definitely worth the watch, if not the buy.
Next we have Mud, a film for which Matthew McConaughey has received a lot of praise. While I haven't seen this one yet, here is a brief synopsis. Two teenage boys cross paths with a fugitive and agree to assist him in his efforts to escape from an island in the Mississippi. Honestly I've heard nothing but good things about this film, and McConaughey in it, and after the epic job he did in the "under-the-radar" hit Killer Joe, I can't help but feel that Matt has finally found his niche on the silver screen. In short this one I would say is totally worth console points or the $5.99 "on demand" rental fee, potentially even worth buying, though I will reserve that judgement until I watch it tonight.
Keep you eyes posted for a full, detailed review of these two films Thursday with my final ratings and thoughts on if they are worth the buy.
Worth the rental, but maybe not the buy.
Lastly, we have two films that have stirred some buzz, but honestly don't really scream to me to take the time to watch them. These are On the Road and The Place Beyond the Pines.
I genuinely couldn't be less interested in watching On the Road. While it does boast an amazing cast (Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Sam Riley, and Garrett Hedlund) the story itself didn't really speak to me. You may have noticed that Kristen Stewart was left off my "amazing cast" list. While she gained a lot of press for this film by agreeing to "show all" on screen, that simply doesn't change the fact that she is by far the worst actress in Hollywood. So, for this one I say wait a bit and check it out via Redbox or Netflix, but certainly don't rush out to the stores just yet or drop console points or "on demand" money for this one.
The Place Beyond the Pines does have my interest peaked, though again red flags keep me from telling you to run out and buy or rent this one for full price. Yet another film with a star-studded ensemble that tells the story of a motorcycle stunt rider who considers the road of crime to help provide for his family...with grave consequences. Truthfully what has me so intrigued is how well Ryan Gosling did in Drive. With what feels like a very similar tone of film it makes me interested to see if he can bring that same level of talent to this film as well.
However, the red flag for me is also that the story feels so similar, do I want to own two copies of the same movie? Or like Oblivion, if it ain't broke, why fix it? For these reasons, this one gets the wait for Redbox or Netflix nod. Though if I have time, I may add this title to Thursday's review list and may upgrade it to a rent now or even buy...guess we'll have to wait and see.
