You know that overly confident, overly annoying person who always has to be right about everything? Presenting Olivia Pope, the main character and head ‘Gladiator’ of Scandal, the latest hit show on ABC. Once again, I stumbled across this show on Netflix. I was curious because I had heard a lot of hype, but after watching season 1 and most of season 2, I wasn’t super impressed.
Now don’t get me wrong, the show is amusing. There is your standard level of political drama, some pretty steamy love scenes, and the required cliffhanger at the end of each episode. But despite all these endearing characteristics, Scandal left me feeling slightly irritated.
The concept of the show is that Olivia Pope and her colleagues at Pope and Associates are ‘fixers’ who preserve the reputations of public figures who get themselves into scandalous situations. The problem is that the ‘fixers’ have a lot of their own problems to fix. And at the heart of the show is Olivia’s own scandalous affair with the President of the United States.
But there are several things about the show that I find problematic. First there is the problem of Olivia Pope; her character is just totally unbelievable. Her unwavering confidence and know-it all attitude just gets under my skin. And for whatever reason, all the associates at her strange little law firm unquestioningly follow her like lambs to the slaughter.
There are also at least two fast-talking, high and mighty power speeches delivered each episode, one by Olivia and the other by the President’s Chief of Staff, Cyrus Bean. It’s like a political version of Gilmore Girls. And on one final nit-picky note, their CGI image of the exterior of the White House is pretty terrible.
Would I recommend this show? If you like political dramas and you have run out of things to watch, then I would give it a shot. But would I encourage you to go out of your way to watch Scandal? Nope. There are far better shows worth watching.
